Programming Case Study #2

Background: A commercial airline provides a database of available "open time" trips for its pilots. 

The pilots can check the database at the airline's website. The pilots contact the airline's crew scheduling to request a trip.

Problem: Pilots were frustrated because open trips come and go quickly. The pilots (or their spouses) had to check the website often if they wanted to adjust their schedules. They could spend hours looking for a coveted trip, and still miss the opportunity.

Benefits to the Airline:

Crew scheduling is happy because open trips are resolved more quickly. The airline's site bandwidth is being used more efficiently because one connection retrieves data for many pilots

Text-messaging and/or e-mail notification service combined with automated data collection

• a website where the pilots set their criteria;  

• an automated data collection engine that logs onto the airline's site on behalf of the pilots and collects the data requested by the pilots;

• a notification system that emits messages to e-mail or text pager addresses specified by the pilots.

Each pilot defines and updates his/her own criteria for trips including trip dates, start and end times and other information. The pilot also blocks out hours when he or she does not wish to receive messages. Pilots still contact crew scheduling to request a trip.

Benefits to Pilots: Pilots don't need to spend hours at a computer checking for desired trips. With text messaging, they can receive notifications anywhere (within cell range) and any time.
